WHAT IS DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOUR THERAPY?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a powerful approach that helps us understand and work with intense emotions and the patterns of behaviour that develop when we don’t know how to manage these feelings. While many therapies focus on changing how we think, DBT focuses on helping us accept where we are, while also giving us tools to grow and make meaningful changes in how we respond to life’s challenges.

As therapists, we know that navigating emotional pain, impulsive behaviors, or relationship difficulties can feel overwhelming. We’ve also experienced moments in our own lives where coping felt out of reach. DBT offers a practical and compassionate way forward - one that balances acceptance with change. It allows us as therapists to draw on both our clinical expertise and our humanity as we support you in building a life worth living.

DBT is built on four core skill areas:

Mindfulness: Learning to be fully present in the moment, without judgment — even when things are painful or difficult. Mindfulness helps us become aware of our thoughts and feelings rather than being overwhelmed by them.

Distress Tolerance: Learning to survive crises and manage overwhelming emotions without making things worse. These skills help us get through painful moments without engaging in harmful or impulsive behaviours.

Emotion Regulation: Understanding and naming our emotions, learning where they come from, and developing tools to manage them so we can feel more stable and in control.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Strengthening how we communicate, ask for what we need, set boundaries, and maintain self-respect in relationships.

DBT was originally developed to support people experiencing suicidal thoughts and self-harm, but it has since been adapted to support many people who feel emotions more intensely than others.

DBT is particularly effective for people struggling with:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
  • Intense emotional disregulation
  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Anxiety and depression

WHAT IS schema THERAPY?

Schema therapy helps us to understand how the difficulties we experience in the present, that stop us from getting our needs met, developed in the past when we were children and teenagers. Whereas more traditional therapies, like CBT, focus on treating symptoms, schema therapy focuses on healing the origins of the problems we suffer from in the here and now.

As therapists we know that change can be really hard and requires a big commitment.  At times, we too have struggled to function in healthy ways when we have experienced hardships and distress in our own lives.  Schema therapy provides opportunities for us as therapists to use both our personal and professional wisdom to connect with you through this journey and support the growth of your healthy self.

Schema therapy is based on four main concepts:

  • Core needs: People have a series of basic emotional needs in childhood, including security, affection, connection, autonomy, play, self-expression, nurturing, and identity. Everyone has the same core needs.
  • Early maladaptive schemas: Schemas are patterns or themes about yourself and your relationships with others. We develop schemas during childhood when our core needs are unmet. Schemas are considered maladaptive because they are at least somewhat dysfunctional.
  • Coping styles: In response to your schemas, you will develop certain behaviors known as coping styles. These styles can be maladaptive as well. Often, they end up reinforcing the original schema.
  • As therapists we know that change can be really hard and requires a big commitment.  At times, we too have struggled to function in healthy ways when we have experienced hardships and distress in our own lives.

Schema therapy is particularly effective for people struggling with:

  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
