Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach that combines elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with concepts of mindfulness and acceptance. It was originally developed by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan in the late 1980's to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), who often struggles with emotional regulation and self-destructive behaviours.
DBT aims to help individuals build skills to manage their emotions, improve relationships, and enhance their overall well-being. It is grounded in the dialectical philosophy of balancing acceptance and change. The term "dialectic" refers to the idea of finding a middle ground between opposing perspectives or beliefs.
Key components of DBT include:
Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness
DBT is not only used for individual with BPD but has shown effectiveness in treating other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
DBT can be delivered through various formats, including individual therapy, skills groups, phone coaching, and consultation teams. It provides individuals with practical tools and strategies to navigate life's challenges, regulate emotions, and improve their overall quality of life.
Schema therapy helps us to understand how the difficulties we experience in the present, that stop us from getting our needs met, developed in the past when we were children and teenagers. Whereas more traditional therapies, like CBT, focus on treating symptoms, schema therapy focuses on healing the origins of the problems we suffer from in the here and now.
As therapists we know that change can be really hard and requires a big commitment. At times, we too have struggled to function in healthy ways when we have experienced hardships and distress in our own lives. Schema therapy provides opportunities for us as therapists to use both our personal and professional wisdom to connect with you through this journey and support the growth of your healthy self.
Schema therapy is based on four main concepts:
